5-day trip Riga, Latvia

We visited Riga, Latvia for a 5-day trip for the first time.
We'll share what we did and some fascinating information about Riga.

 *Day 1*

*Arrival in Riga and Exploring Central Market*

We landed at Riga International Airport from Berlin via Ryanair and took the 22nd bus to the city center. The ticket vending machine was broken, so we couldn't purchase a 5-day ticket. We bought one-way tickets on the bus for 2 euros each.

We headed to the city center and visited the Central Market. Each building in the Central Market had different types of goods, including meat, groceries, food, and fish. Outside, various items were sold, ranging from vegetables to magazines. I bought smoked squid, cheese-wrapped salmon, and smoked mackerel.

Later, we had lunch at a buffet restaurant called Lido. They offered a variety of traditional Latvian dishes at affordable prices. Surprisingly, our bill for plenty of food and even beer was only around 22 euros for the two of us. We then checked into our Airbnb hotel early and headed to the spa we had booked in the Old Town. The spa, located in the basement of the Wellton Hotel, offered steam saunas, dry saunas, jacuzzis, and a pool, providing a relaxing experience. We later bought additional groceries from Rimi supermarket and enjoyed a dinner featuring the fish we bought at the market.

*Day 2*

*Exploring Riga's Scenic Beauty and Gastronomy*

On the morning of Day 2, we took the 13th bus to the Latvian Academy of Sciences' observation deck. The view from there was breathtaking, offering a panoramic view of Riga, including the Old Town and even the distant Riga Bay. We were fortunate to have good weather as well.

To reach the rooftop, you can find the reception on the left upon entering the building. There, you can pay 3 euros per person and take the elevator on the right to the top floor. Note that you'll need to climb one floor of stairs to reach the topmost level.

Later, we returned to the Central Market and bought Samosas, a pastry filled with a triangle-shaped filling, and chocolate cake with rum. The hint of rum added a delightful touch to the cake. We also purchased beef for dinner, along with fresh salad vegetables, pomegranates, grapes, tangerines, and pickled cucumbers. I found it intriguing to see so many pomegranates in a cold country, most of which were imported from former Soviet Union republics in Central Asia, which made me ponder their historical connections.

For lunch, we enjoyed the old town of Riga. Not particularly hungry, we only ordered soup. However, we were served sorrel soup, solyanka soup, and delicious black bread, along with a glass of water, which cost us around 16 euros.

Later, we visited the Three Brothers building and the Cat House, and enjoyed some hot wine (Glühwein) at a restaurant on the way back. We stopped by Rimi to buy bread, alcohol, coffee, and chips and were surprised by the affordable prices at the vintage clothing store, "Humana Vintage," where we found sweaters, pants, and coats for just 1 euro each.

In the evening, we returned home and enjoyed a dinner of steak, vegetables, pickles, and black bread.

*Day 3*

*Exploring Riga and Discovering its History*

On the morning of Day 3, after breakfast, we took a brief look at the nearby thrift shop before exploring Riga in the opposite direction from the city by bus. We admired the Art Nouveau architecture and took a break at a coffee shop, enjoying coffee and bread.

Later, we withdrew some cash and boarded the bus, stopping by to see the Freedom Monument and the Blackhead House on the way. Then, we headed to the medieval restaurant "LASITE" for beer, porridge soup, and tasty garlic toast, before visiting the History Museum.

On the way back, we made a detour on foot, returned home, and enjoyed the remaining squid and salad for dinner, concluding the day.

*Day 4*

*Market Visits and Exploring the City*

On the morning of Day 4, we stopped by a miscellaneous market but didn't purchase anything. We then took a bus to the weekend market across the river. We purchased food, scarves, and hats and enjoyed delicious sausages.

Later, we headed south and bought beer, dumplings, and egg bread at another market,Agenskalns Market. We checked out a nearby thrift store, but couldn't find any items for men.

We went to the Old Town to look for a souvenir shop and then I went to the hamam, while my husband returned to the accommodation. After the hamam, we enjoyed some beer at a pub,Ala Pagrabs, recommended by Toshiki.

In the evening, we bought salmon, cheese, and wine from Rimi and had dinner, enjoying the leftovers.

*Day 5*

*Visiting the Free Market and the Last Day*

On the morning of Day 5, we visited the free market at the western market hall we had visited the day before. I bought a glass dish for 2 euros. At the market hall, we bought cakes and éclairs and returned to our accommodation.

We then packed our belongings, enjoyed some cake before check-out, and went to Keepmy Bag by tram, which cost us 9 euros for the day.

We took a train to see the sea, heading to the area around Jurmala Beach. We went to the station called Dubulti and enjoyed the round trip for just about 5 euros for both of us. From Dubulti, we walked along the seaside to the next station, where we saw many people taking a stroll.

We returned to Riga city from Majori station by train and went to a large Lido amusement park by tram, where we enjoyed our final dinner.

We had sauerkraut, borscht, turkey schnitzel, sushi-like rolls with spinach and cheese, beer (special), and a dessert resembling berry and cheesecake.

After a filling meal, we retrieved our belongings from the locker and headed to Riga International Airport.
